Belmond Cap Juluca, Anguilla: An Honest Review (Seaweed and All)

This Belmond Cap Juluca review covers everything — the villas, the beach, and yes, the seaweed.

Anguilla has been one of my favorite Caribbean islands since I was a kid — we used to go as a family, and it’s stayed on my bucket list ever since. And on that list, there was always one name underlined twice: Belmond Cap Juluca. It’s the hotel everyone points to when they talk about Anguilla. THE iconic one.

So when it came time to plan a real trip — a reward-myself trip, after having a baby, because I needed a break and honestly just needed to treat myself — I did what I always do and researched it to death. Four Seasons or Belmond? Belmond or Four Seasons? I went back and forth for weeks. In the end, Cap Juluca won, because it felt like the once-in-a-lifetime, bucket-list version of Anguilla. I was thrilled to finally book it.

Here’s the honest version of how it went — the good, the “wait, what,” and the one thing I really want you to know before you spend the money on this place. (And if you want the full rundown on Anguilla itself — where to go, what to skip — check out my Anguilla guide.)

First Impressions

Getting there was easy. The hotel arranged our transfer, and we opted for the cheaper taxi option instead of their car service, which they set up without any hassle. Check-in was smooth, our room was ready, and a golf cart whisked us over to our room — so far, so good. We were assigned a butler, who turned out to be genuinely great throughout the stay.

Then we went to check out the water. And this is the thing nobody tells you: there was seaweed. A lot of it. If you’ve ever looked into the Belmond Cap Juluca, you know the whole pitch — walk right out your door onto your dedicated beach chairs on a private stretch of beach with crystal-clear, postcard-blue water. What we actually saw, walking along the sand, was seaweed. Everywhere. Not exactly the moment I’d been picturing for a year.

We asked our butler what our options were for getting into the water. His answer: “Honestly, the Four Seasons beach is clear now” Which — considering I’d spent weeks agonizing between the two — was not the response I was hoping for. But it was our first night, so we tried to make lemonade out of it and figured we’d rent a car the next day and go find clear water elsewhere on the island.

The Seaweed, the Car, and the Manager Who Turned It Around

We asked about a car that first night and were told all set and to come back in the morning. So we did — and were told there were actually no more rental cars available anywhere on the island that day. Now we were two-for-two on plans falling through, with a beach we couldn’t really use and nowhere else lined up to go instead.

We asked to speak with the manager, and this is where the story turns. He was fantastic. On the seaweed, he was honest with us — he said sargassum like this was rare, and in his time at the property he could only remember it happening twice. He didn’t make excuses for the car situation, either; he just owned it and made it his mission to make things right, and got us our car. Across the board, he genuinely worked to turn the whole experience around.

This is really the thing I want people to take away: Belmond Cap Juluca is an iconic, expensive, luxury destination, but that doesn’t make it immune to nature. Sargassum (the seaweed) is a real issue across the Caribbean depending on when you go, and it can absolutely show up at a five-star hotel with a private beach. Go in with your expectations calibrated, do a little research on sargassum season before you book, and know that even paradise has an off week sometimes.

The Rooms — 9/10

Dedicated Beachfront Chairs

The rooms themselves are beautiful — the oceanfront view and private balcony alone make it worth it. Each room also comes with its own set of beach chairs, just steps away and already set up right in front of the water. Honestly, this was one of the main reasons I booked the place — no scrambling for a chair or hunting down towels, just a full setup waiting for you. And the beds deserve their own shoutout: genuinely some of the most comfortable I’ve slept in, which matters more on a trip like this than people give it credit for.

A few things held it back from a higher score. The room wasn’t the most modern, so I knocked off a little for that, given its price point. The bathroom felt a little tight for a five-star property — not what I expected.  We also walked in without some basics I’d expect to just be there, like a beach bag; we had to ask for a few things that felt like they should’ve been standard. To their credit, once we flagged it, they moved fast to fix it — and that responsiveness matters a lot to me in a luxury stay. But the fact that we had to ask at all is why this isn’t a 10.

The Service — 7/10 (Management: 10/10)

I’m splitting this one out, because the two halves of the experience genuinely didn’t match. On the frontline side, there were more small misses than I’d expect from a five-star property: at Cip’s by Cipriani, we were handed the wrong bill and had to get it sorted ourselves. On our first night, turndown service just never happened — we had to call and ask for it. Add that to the shaky start — expecting a car the next morning and instead being told none were left on the island at all — and the butler’s offhand comment about the Four Seasons, and it adds up to a real pattern for a hotel at this price point. That’s why overall service lands at a 7/10 for me rather than higher — there’s genuine work to do on execution.

Management, though, is a completely different story — a 10/10, no hesitation. Every time we flagged an issue, they owned it immediately and moved fast to make it right, no defensiveness, no runaround. That’s exactly the kind of recovery you only get from leadership that actually cares. And the details, once things got rolling, backed that up: on our one full clear-water day, we walked down to find our beach chairs waiting for us right outside our room — coolers stocked with cold water, towels clean and ready to go. And also they would come by with little cold treats while we were lounging all day. Nothing to hunt for, nothing to ask twice for.

So here’s where I land: the frontline team has real work to do, but based on how their management showed up for us every single time, I genuinely believe they have what it takes to close that gap.

The Vibe — 7/10

Here’s the one to think hardest about if you’re picking Belmond Cap Juluca for a couples trip like we did. If your idea of a great vacation is total, unplugged quiet — no music, no scene, nowhere to be — this place nails it. But if you want any kind of buzz, know going in that there really isn’t one.

There’s no real hotel bar scene or nighttime activity to speak of. You can’t really walk anywhere else in Anguilla from the property, so you’d have to arrange a car or taxi. My husband is a big basketball fan, and this was smack in the middle of the playoff season — he asked, point blank, if there were any TVs around. The answer was an equally point-blank no and to try the Four Seasons or a local bar. Even at the Cap Shack, the most casual, beachy spot on property, there was no music playing — which could’ve added a nice Caribbean cultural feel. There are only four restaurants on property, and between early closures and restaurants getting shut down for private events, your options can shrink fast on a given night.

That said, the days are a different story and it’s truly a beach escape. One of my favorite touches: the hotel offers bikes to get around the property. Almost everyone used them, and it’s such a great way to be outside — you get to burn off a margarita or two and feel the salty breeze in your hair while you’re at it.

If quiet and low-key is exactly what you’re after, add points to this score. If you want any energy at night, this is worth knowing before you book.

Where We Ate

There are four restaurants on property, and here’s the rundown:

The Cap Shack, Belmond Cap Juluca
The Cap Shack

The Cap Shack is the small, casual, toes-in-the-sand spot — very seafood- and meat-forward, so not exactly a vegetarian’s dream (I am one), but it’s cute and has a nice laid-back energy. Just know it closes early, and like the others, it can be shut down for private events some nights.

Cip’s by Cipriani had the best view of the three, and breakfast there was genuinely nice. Dinner was just okay, though — nothing I’d tell you to rearrange your night for. And on top of that, we were handed the wrong bill at one point and had to get it corrected ourselves, which shouldn’t happen at this level.

And then there’s Pimms, the third spot we tried. The staff there were fantastic — they put together a vegetarian option for me without any fuss and were warm and accommodating the whole time. Really appreciated that.

One I’ll flag but can’t speak to: Uchu, the Peruvian-Japanese fusion restaurant also on property. We didn’t get a chance to try it during our stay, so I can’t vouch for it either way — but if you go, it’s worth checking out and reporting back.

One fun tradition worth knowing about: every night around 6pm, they do a champagne sabering — guests get to try it themselves. It’s a small thing, but it’s a genuinely fun, unique touch. If you get the chance, do it.

What We Did: Boat Day and the Spa

The boat day was a highlight, and honestly, getting off property felt especially good given the seaweed situation. We stopped at Prickly Pear island for lunch, and it was such gem. The water so crystal clear and beautiful and they had an amazing authentic local restaurant — my husband, who eats meat, said his lunch was incredible, the rum punch was excellent, and the whole spot was beautiful. If a boat excursion is on the table during your stay, I’d genuinely recommend it.

Guerlain Spa

The Guerlain Spa is also worth carving out time for. It’s beautiful, uses all Guerlain products, and has this cool, almost Mediterranean feel to it. There’s a rooftop pool up there along with several plunge pools, so you can easily spend a big chunk of a day just up in that space — we saw plenty of other guests doing exactly that. Service there was excellent, no notes.

The Bottom Line

Quick take:

  • Rooms: 9/10 — generally nice and the view is unbeatable; tight bathrooms and some missing basics keep it from a perfect score
  • Service: 7/10 (Management: 10/10) — real frontline misses (wrong bill, missed turndown, slow start), but management owned every issue immediately and I trust them to fix the gap
  • Vibe: 7/10 — beautiful if you want total quiet, but there’s no nightlife, no music even at the casual spots, limited dining, and not much to do after dark

Would I recommend Belmond Cap Juluca? Yes — but with a real caveat. This is an expensive, iconic, luxury destination, and it can absolutely deliver that dreamy, walk-out-to-crystal-water experience. But it isn’t guaranteed, and I want you to go in with your eyes open: seaweed can happen even here, the property leans quiet rather than lively, and a few of the small luxury touches may need a nudge before they show up. We got one truly perfect day there, and it was everything I’d imagined for a year of planning. I just wish it had been all of them.

If you’re after a completely relaxing, unplug-from-everything kind of trip, this is a great fit. If you want some nighttime energy along with your luxury, go in knowing you’ll need to create that yourself.
